WEBINAR: Shame, Pride, and Relational Trauma: Concepts and Psychotherapy

November 6 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

$10

Explore shame, pride, and relational trauma in this webinar with US based Ken Benau, Ph.D.

“Pro-being pride is defined as, “I delight in being me, delighting in you delighting in being yourself, with me” (self with other); and “I delight in being me, delighting in me delighting in being myself, with me” (self with self). “

Ken Benau

Shame is basic to being human, reflecting explicit and implicit judgments of self, other, and relationship. So, too, is pride, although it has rarely been discussed in the psychotherapy literature. This two-hour webinar will demonstrate the centrality of shame and pride in psychotherapy with survivors of relational trauma, including abuse, neglect, and attachment wounds.

This webinar will:

    • Define shame, pride, and relational trauma.
    • Describe adaptive and maladaptive shame and pride subtypes, with a special emphasis on “pro-being pride”. Pro-being pride is defined as, “I delight in being me, delighting in you delighting in being yourself, with me” (self with other); and “I delight in being me, delighting in me delighting in being myself, with me” (self with self).
    • Delineate a neurophysiological and psychological process of moving from “going on being” and aliveness to shame and dissociation.
    • Demonstrate how a “parts” model informs our understanding of interrelational and intrarelational shame processes.
    • Use transcripts of several psychotherapy sessions with a relational trauma survivor, to document movement from a traumatic shame state to pro-being pride, states of “oneness”, grief, and deepened integration within the patient, and connection with others and the world.
    • Offer participants some opportunities to discuss further these ideas with Dr. Benau.
